CHAPTER 9

Tim stood outside the door to the room where Sam Ross waited. Tim wanted to start the interview, but he knew he should wait for Wanda and Kelly. The three of them would be a formidable team, although Tim was certain Sam Ross was not going to confess. He wasn’t the type. Tim straightened, as Wanda and Kelly arrived.

“Is he waiting?” Kelly asked.

“He is,” Tim answered. “I don’t think he’s happy.”

“That’s good,” Kelly said. “When a suspect is unhappy, he makes more mistakes.”

Tim opened the door and let the women pass, along with Wanda’s cat. Tim wasn’t quite sure why they cat was there, but Tim wasn’t going to call it a foul.

Sam Ross looked fresh and neat, a businessman. He smiled, a tight smile that told Tim there was some tension in the man.

“Thank you for your cooperation,” Kelly said and sat. “I don’t want to waste your time or mine. Did you have anything to do with the death of Sheila Pryce?”

Sam shook his head. “Not one thing. I had no reason to harm Sheila. If my crazy cousin says otherwise, she’s lying.”

“Would it surprise you if she did accuse you?”

“She’s reckless and can’t be trusted. That’s why I want Quentin to take over the business. He wouldn’t go off half-cocked like Allyson.”

“Did you know if Sheila was allergic to anything?”

“I knew she had allergies, but I had no idea what they might be. I think most people are allergic to a lot of things, although the severity of the allergy varies.”

Tim listened as Kelly and Wanda asked a few more questions. Yes, Sam had been in the building when Sheila died. No, he didn’t visit her office.

“For my money,” Sam said. “It was Allyson who might have wanted to knock off Sheila. After all, there’s a rumor going around that Allyson was embezzling money. If that’s true, Sheila’s notes might prove it.”

After a few more fruitless minutes, Sam was released. He left, but not before he reiterated his belief that Allyson could be responsible for Sheila’s death. After he was gone, Tim joined Wanda and Kelly at the table.

“What do you think?” Kelly asked.

“A classic case of he-said-she-said,” Wanda said. “They’re accusing each other.”

“I agree,” Tim added. “But, I have no idea if they really believe that, or just want to get the other one out of the business.”

“Good observation,” Kelly said. “Casting aspersions on each other might be enough to get what they want.”

“We shouldn’t limit our inquiries to the two of them,” Wanda said. “Especially, when their motives are simply to throw dirt.”

“That brings me back to Maria and Quentin Ross,” Kelly said. “Quentin might well have the best motive, as he wants to take over the company. Maria might like Quentin enough to help in something illegal.”

“Quentin did find Sheila,” Tim said. “So, we add Quentin and Maria to the suspect list?”

“I don’t see how we can eliminate them at this point. They were there.”

“I do like Maria,” Wanda said. “Yet, it would be wrong to pronounce her innocent at this point.
